LEED Gold. The City of Lynn in collaboration with the MSBA undertook to replace the 1923 Thurgood Marshall Middle School which serves grades 6-8 due to overcrowding and deteriorating conditions. There was an extensive Feasibility Study performed to determine the best solution in terms of construction and site selection. Several Brookline Street parcels were taken by eminent domain to site the new Thurgood Marshall Middle School. The Brookline Street site was predominantly vacate with only three structures on it and was the least disruptive and most viable of the site options analyzed. The MSBA and the City of Lynn voters approved a $92 million project to build an 181,647 SF school to house 1,100 students. The school was designed for flexibility to provide the ability to accommodate additional students through the conversion of specialty spaces to classrooms should student population growth exceed design enrollment. The project cost includes land acquisition costs, the abatement and demolition of the existing school and the restoration of the old school’s site. Construction began in May 2014 and completed in April 2016. Fit-out of the school occurred in March and April 2016. The school opened to students in the third trimester of the 2015-2016 school year. This project was completed while Lynn was under the employment of Joslin Lesser + Associates - NV5.
